What does a fractional CRO do, and is it worth it?

By Jean-Michel Moreau, founder, Rapid Product Growth Updated Nov 2026 · 7 min read

Short answer

A fractional CRO is a part-time revenue leader. They own the pipeline, the offer, the sales process, hiring and ramping sellers, and the numbers. It’s worth it at $2M to $20M when the founder is still the sales team and nobody owns revenue end to end. Judge it in 90 days, on what each held sales call costs and what it turns into.

What a fractional CRO owns

A fractional CRO owns every stage from the offer to the signed contract, and the numbers that tie them together.

Marketing owns leads. Sales owns calls. Revenue goes missing in the gap between them, and the founder ends up covering it. A fractional CRO makes one person responsible for revenue, not for one stage of it.

Pipeline
Which channel, which buyers, how many qualified calls a month, and what each one costs.
Offer
What you lead with, so a buyer who has never heard of you can say yes to a first step.
Sales process
Discovery script, follow-up, call reviews, and a clear next step after every call.
Sellers
When to hire the first account executive, the profile, the interviews and the ramp.
Metrics

Fractional CRO, full-time CRO or agency

Hire fractional when you need a revenue owner but not yet a full-time executive, and an agency when you only need more meetings.

You probably need one if most of these are true:

  1. The founder is still the only person who closes.
  2. You tried a salesperson and the work fell back to you.
  3. New clients come from referrals, so the pipeline is lumpy.
  4. Nobody can tell you what a booked sales call costs.
  5. Marketing says the leads are fine and sales says they aren’t.
  • “Otherwise, I’m the only salesman in this company and I don’t want to be that anymore.”
  • “I tried a dedicated salesperson, but it’s fallen back to me for the last few years.”
  • “sales folks coming in, like, I’m OK to collect three months check, and even if I don’t close anything, that’s all right, right?”

A fractional CRO’s first 90 days

The first 90 days should go from a map of how you sell today to held sales calls, a weekly scorecard and a plan for your first seller.

This is the order we run it in when we play this role for a client. Each step finds the next constraint and fixes it.

  1. Days 1 to 14

Map how the business sells today. Define the buyer. Rebuild the offer for buyers who have never heard of you.

  2. Days 15 to 30

Funnel live on Meta or LinkedIn. SDRs call every new lead within 5 minutes. First held sales calls.

  3. Days 31 to 60

Weekly call reviews. Discovery script and follow-up tightened. Campaigns cut or scaled on cost per held call.

  4. Days 61 to 90

Budget moves to what works. Profile and hiring plan for the first account executive, so the founder can leave sales.

How to measure a fractional CRO

Measure cost per held sales call first, then what those calls turn into. Leads and clicks come last.

A fractional CRO should give you one weekly scorecard. These are the lines on it, with what we see in the dev-shop and software funnels we run (including our own). Use them as a sanity check, not a promise.

What a fractional CRO costs

A fractional CRO costs a fraction of a full-time executive. The real price depends on time, scope and how much of the fee is tied to results.

One fractional CRO gives advice a day a week. Another runs the ads, the follow-up and the call reviews. Compare on these drivers, not the title.

Ad spend is separate. The dev-shop and software funnels we run (including our own) spend about $10,600 a month on ads, typically $9,200 to $12,200. With RPG, every engagement is scoped in your growth plan, with a written guarantee, and part of the fee can move onto new deals.

Common questions

What does a fractional CRO do day to day?

They run a weekly numbers review, listen to recorded sales calls, fix the step that loses the most deals, and decide where budget goes next. Early on that means the offer and the funnel. Later it means the sales process and hiring the first seller. You should see one scorecard a week and a clear next constraint.

How much does a fractional CRO cost?

It depends on time per week, whether they execute or only advise, whether a team comes with them, and how much of the fee is tied to results. Ad spend is on top. Compare offers on what they own and what happens if it doesn’t work, not on the hourly rate.

Is a fractional CRO worth it for a SaaS or software firm?

Yes, if the founder is still closing every deal and nobody owns revenue end to end. No, if you already have a working sales team that needs daily management. Then hire a full-time CRO. And if your offer and calls already close, a lead-gen agency is cheaper.

What’s the difference between a fractional CRO and a fractional CMO?

A fractional CMO owns marketing: brand, positioning, channels and leads. A fractional CRO owns revenue, which includes the sales calls, the follow-up and the sellers. If deals stall after the meeting, a CMO won’t fix that. A CRO should.

When should I replace a fractional CRO with a full-time one?

When you have several sellers who need managing every day, and the pipeline is steady enough that the job is running a team, not building a machine. A good fractional CRO leaves you with the system, the data and a hiring profile, so the full-time hire starts from a working base.
